We’re committed to providing the highest quality of dentistry for those in or around the areas of Narberth and Penn Valley, PA. We offer comprehensive dental care in order to help our patients achieve an optimal level of oral and overall health. One of the ways we accomplish this is by preventing tooth decay.

Tooth decay is a disease that results from the interaction of bacteria that naturally occurs in the mouth and sugar that’s consumed. Sugar causes a reaction in the bacteria, which then produces acids. These acids will break down the minerals in teeth and cause cavities. At Main Line Center for Dental Excellence, we offer several solutions for preventing tooth decay, including the following.

REGULAR DENTAL VISITS

One of the most important things you can do to maintain proper oral hygiene is to come to your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleanings. Our doctors will assess your needs and determine the appropriate amount of time between visits. During these visits, your dentist  will examine your teeth, provide an evaluation of any existing dental problems, and a proposal of treatments if any problems exist. Additionally, your hygienist will clean your teeth thoroughly during your visit.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY DIET

In order for the teeth, bones, and soft tissue of your mouth to remain healthy, they require a balanced diet. Eating a variety of foods from the five food groups will help minimize cavities and avoid other dental problems. Foods such as vegetables, yogurts, and cheeses will help promote a healthier mouth. It’s also important to limit sugary and starchy foods like cookies, candies, chips, and crackers.

SEALANTS

The grooves in the chewing surfaces of the molars (back teeth) make it easy for food to get trapped inside. Not only that, but once food gets stuck in there, it can sometimes be hard to get out. This is troublesome because when bacteria react with the food, acid forms and breaks down the tooth enamel. This problem can be eliminated with sealants. Sealants are made of a resin material and applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars in order to seal the grooves and prevent food and bacteria from accumulating. They’ll last for several years, but they need to be checked during regular appointments.

FLUORIDE

Fluoride is a substance that will help teeth become stronger and more resistant to tooth decay. Many toothpastes, mouthwashes, and even dental floss contain fluoride, so using these products will strengthen your teeth.
