Main Line Center for Dental Excellence is constantly striving to provide the most comprehensive care for those looking for Narberth dentistry. We offer a wide array of general treatment and cosmetic dentistry in order to give each and every one of our patients a healthy and beautiful smile. One such procedure that we offer in our Narberth office is root canal therapy.
ABOUT ROOT CANALS
A root canal is a procedure that extracts the decayed pulp from the central part of the tooth, reshapes the canal, and then fills and replaces it with strengthened filler. A root canal may be needed in the event of dental injuries, severe decay, or infection of the tooth pulp. If this problem is left untreated, it can cause extensive damage to the tooth structure. When the damage goes beyond what can normally be treated with a filling, a root canal is used to save the tooth and retain its integrity.
THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE
When you come in for a root canal treatment with your Main Line dentist, you’ll undergo the following procedure:
- First, the doctor will examine the tooth and the surrounding areas, both visually and with x-rays.
- After the treatment has been decided on, the tooth will be numbed with local anesthetic and a dental dam will be placed over the area to protect it and keep it dry.
- An opening will be made in the tooth so the pulp can then be removed from the pulp chambers and the root canals.
- Finally, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and the canals will be sealed back up.
While this procedure is generally completed in one visit, more extensive cases may take multiple visits.
AFTER THE PROCEDURE
You’ll have a temporary restoration after you leave your appointment with us. There should be no problem with you driving home afterward. You should make a follow-up appointment in a few weeks to receive your permanent restoration. If you experience any problems after your root canal, please get in touch with us immediately. Depending on the severity of the situation, we can schedule a free follow-up appointment so we can check your healing.
