In addition to in-office dental care, maintaining a diligent oral hygiene regimen is critical to overall oral and dental health.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ORAL HYGIENE

Oral hygiene is a crucial component to a healthy smile. Failing to maintain proper oral hygiene puts the teeth at risk for dental decay, bacterial inflammation, and gum disease, potentially causing serious problems in the mouth and teeth. In addition to dental issues like cavities and sensitivity, the bacterial inflammation associated with gum disease has been linked to chronic health issues such as stroke, heart disease, and premature, low-weight babies. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to maintain proper oral hygiene and protect your teeth from damage.

PROPER ORAL HYGIENE

Brushing and flossing are the cornerstones of successful oral hygiene, but there are a number of other components necessary to adequately protect your teeth. You should visit our office for examinations and professional cleanings at least twice a year, as this allows us to thoroughly clean your teeth and mouth while also checking for problems like cavities or gum disease. To ensure proper oral health and hygiene, incorporate the following things into your regimen:

  • Brush at least three times daily with fluoridated toothpaste
  • Floss daily using proper technique
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet low in acidic or sugary foods and drinks
  • Visit us at least twice a year for cleanings
  • Stop smoking
  • Discontinue use of all smokeless tobacco products (nicotine patches are an effective aid in quitting that do not explicitly harm the teeth)
