WHY SOME PATIENTS NEED TO SEE A DENTIST MORE OFTEN

Posted on 10/04/2016

Visiting your dentist twice a year is a good rule of thumb to follow as most patients can maintain a healthy, happy smile with a dental checkup and cleaning every six months; however, this standard guideline is not a “one size fits all” steadfast rule.

WHO SHOULD SEE THEIR DENTIST MORE OFTEN?

There are several conditions and circumstances that may require more frequent dental visits and it’s best to let a dental professional help you determine the right visit schedule for your oral health. Below is a little more information on who should speak with their dentists about scheduling appointments more than twice a year.

PATIENTS WITH DIABETES

Diabetic patients run a higher risk for developing oral problems like fungal infections and gum disease.

TOBACCO USERS

Oral cancer and gum disease are a risk factor for tobacco users.

PREGNANT WOMEN

The shift in hormones experienced during pregnancy can cause gum inflammation and other oral problems.

PEOPLE WITH HEART DISEASE

Dental health and heart health are closely related, so people with heart disease can benefit from frequent dental checkups and cleanings.

PEOPLE WITH DRY MOUTH

When a person doesn’t produce enough saliva, the risk for developing tooth decay and gum disease is increased as saliva plays an important part in rinsing away bacteria that is present in the mouth.

PEOPLE WHOSE MAIN SOURCE OF DRINKING WATER IS WELL WATER

Well water may not contain enough fluoride to protect teeth from tooth decay, so if a person regularly drinks well water, more frequent visits to the dentist may be necessary.

PEOPLE TAKING CERTAIN MEDICATIONS

Some medications such as antidepressants, muscle relaxants and antihistamines can cause dry mouth and raise the risk for developing tooth decay and gum disease. It is important to provide a comprehensive list of medications to your dental office.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE POOR DIETS

Eating a consistently poor diet and consuming too much sugar raises the risk for developing cavities and gum disease.
