As your trusted Narberth and Merion cosmetic dentist, we at Main Line Center for Dental Excellence don’t only offer cosmetic dentistry to make your teeth look great, but we’re also able to provide the general treatment needed to fix any possible underlying issues. Through our wide array of general dental treatments, we’re able to help you with a number of different oral problems. Some of the most common problems a patient may have include the following.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, which is commonly referred to as a cavity, is a damaged area of a person’s tooth. Tooth decay occurs through a process that generally starts through the consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods, such as cookies, candy, or soft drinks. These foods leave behind deposits on a person’s teeth. These deposits will then bond with bacteria and form plaque. Plaque will produce acids that will eat away at tooth enamel and cause tooth decay.

Sensitive Teeth

Teeth will expand and contract in reaction to changes in temperature. Foods and beverages that are hot or cold can cause pain or discomfort to those with sensitive teeth. Even breathing cold air can be uncomfortable for people with extremely sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth may develop for a number of reasons. This can include tooth enamel wearing down, receding gums, or the development of microscopic cracks in the teeth.

Gum Disease

In the early stages of gum disease, referred to as gingivitis, gums will easily bleed and become red and swollen. When this progresses to a later stage, periodontitis, teeth may fall out or need to be removed by a dentist. Gum disease is sometimes noticeable because of bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth. Gum disease can be prevented by daily brushing and flossing, although when this disease reaches the later stages, you’ll need to come into our Narberth office for periodontics.

Halitosis (Bad Breath)

Halitosis is frequently caused by food particles that deteriorate when they’re left in the mouth. Daily brushing and flossing is a great way to prevent this problem. However, if bad breath is consistent and not related to foods that are eaten, halitosis may be a sign of gum disease or other dental problems.

Canker Sores

Canker sores, also called aphthous ulcers, are small, recurring sores inside of the mouth. Canker sores generally have a white or gray base that’s surrounded by a red border. These can last for about one to two weeks, although the usage of antimicrobial mouthwashes or topical agents can lessen the duration. Here at Main Line Center for Dental Excellence, we treat canker sores with laser dentistry.

Orthodontic Problems

A malocclusion, which is a bite that doesn’t meet properly, can either be inherited or it can be caused. Some of the causes of malocclusions include crowded teeth, missing teeth, misaligned jaws, facial trauma, or bad habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.
